Cutting copper pipe straight is crucial for a good quality job. In this guide we describe how to cut copper pipe to ensure that your first attempt at connecting the pipe up will seal the first time, without any leaks.
Choose the Right Tool
DIY Copper Pipe Cutters: Using a Hacksaw or Pipe Slice to Cut Copper Pipe. When cutting copper pipe it is always best to use a copper pipe cutter as it gives the cleanest and most accurate cut. However, there are occasions when a copper pipe cutter cannot be used due to space constraints. This is where the use of a hacksaw or pipe slice comes in handy.
Mark the Pipe Accurately
You use a piece of masking tape (about 1 inch wide) to mark around the pipe at the cut point. You line up the edge of the tape where you want the cut to be. This serves as a straight edge for all the circumference of the pipe.
Cut With Steady, Even Pressure
Score the pipe on the first rotation of the rotary cutter through the pipe, to set the wheel. Then, for each subsequent rotation, tighten the knob a quarter turn. This will ensure that the pipe is cut cleanly and quickly through. When using a hacksaw to cut through a pipe, remember to let the saw do the work, and do not press too hard as this will only cause the blade to wander. Always use cutting tools in accordance with safe working practices, as stated by the HSE, and keep your fingers away from the blade path at all times.
Deburr the Cut End
Most rotary cutters have a reamer built into the back of them – these are very small and used to remove the internal burr from copper. There are also round files which are suitable for this too. The object is to rub the internal edge of the pipe with the file to make it smooth, this can be done by placing the pipe against a flat surface and rubbing your finger around the inside of the pipe.
Check the Cut Is Square
To check whether your cut is straight, place the cut end of the pipe against a flat surface. If one end rises above the other then the cut is at an angle and any compression or soldered fitting will fail to seal. Trim off a little more pipe and recheck.

A square, deburred end of copper pipe can take a minute to complete, but can save hours of repair work in the long run.
